But current tools are too limited for daily shared life

Why do shared finance tools fall short?

Group finance tools today are built for specific niches, not for the messiness of real, ongoing shared life. Users want a simpler, more communal way to spend directly from a shared pool without the hassle of traditional banking.

What do existing solutions get wrong?

Simple tools like Splitwise force one person to pay upfront and manually chase others. Shared Accounts solve the pooling problem but are legally complex and difficult to dissolve. Neither option fits daily use.

Benchmarked: Revolut Split Bill, Group Pocket, Splitwise, Wise, HyperJar.

Benchmarking the Landscape

We mapped every shared finance tool against one question: does it let a group spend directly from a shared pool without friction? None of them did.

Who is stuck in the gap?

Problem Statement: Current group finance tools are too limited for daily shared life; either too simple and manual, or too legally complex to be practical.

So what does the Pouch need to be?

No one fronts the money, funds are pooled beforehand

Spend directly using a virtual or physical card

Include people without a full Revolut account

Support multiple currencies for international groups

Enable customizable, flexible bill splitting

The decisions we took

A tiered identity system

Anti Money Laundering compliance is met through tiered Know Your Customer process: full for Anchors, Light for spending Guests, and none at all for Guests who only add money.

Quick Action Bar

A persistent bar gives every member one-tap access to top up or split without digging through menus.

Proactive Notification Banner

The app alerts users when contributions are uneven, handling the awkward conversation automatically.

Panic Button

Any member can immediately freeze the Pouch's card if something feels wrong, keeping security in everyone's hands.

Final Settlement

When the Pouch closes, leftover money is returned to each contributor's original payment method, no awkward remainder.

Revolut User Flow

Why this works for Revolut

Zero-cost user acquisition through organic invitations

Converts Guests into full Revolut account holders

Interchange fees and FX revenue from Guest spending

Reactivates inactive users when invited to a Pouch
